It was the summer eleven-year-old Anna learned the meaning of the word courage.

She needed courage for many things, from dealing with the bull... to trusting the Gypsies... to getting along with her classmates. But the most memorable day was when Mama decided to melt the lard. Anna was sweeping the porch when a piercing scream brought her broom to a halt. It's Mama! she thought wildly. Something happened to Mama!

Set in a simpler age, this story based on true happenings takes us back to the time of the Great Depression—a time when many of our modern conveniences could not even be imagined. But one thing was the same: they needed to wait on the Lord and trust Him.
