Prophecy was more than predictions of conditions and events, though it included these. It was more than putting the finger accurately and firmly on the need of the hour, though this too was an integral part. The vital principle that animated prophecy introduced the testimony of Jesus in the writings of the prophets. These writings filled people with expectation of the coming of the Just One. And this expectation did something to the lives of the people. It motivated them to strive for personal victory over sin. And it still does. Reading the prophets with a true heart, a person comes to know the Lord better, to be more like Him.
